Sinfonietta Riga string quartet;

Programme: Emīls Dārziņš, Aldonis Kalniņš, Jeremy Cohen, Emilis Melngailis, Astor Piazzolla

The beautiful manor house of Ungurmuiža and an unforgettably romantic, summer fragrance and passionate music-filled evening of dances from Latvia and America in the company of a subtle yet sonorous string quartet. Aldonis Kalniņš with his joyful arrangements of Latvian traditional folk songs; Emilis Melngailis with his cheerful dance steps and Emīls Dārziņš’ ‘Melancholic Waltz’, arranged for four string musicians by the cellist of the Sinfonietta Rīga String Quartet Kārlis Klotiņš (the first public performance of this version) – this is the first, Latvian-inspired part of the programme.

The second part of the programme features miniatures by the American virtuoso of electric jazz violin Jeremy Cohen and pieces by the one and only King of Argentine tango Astro Piazzolla: his popular ‘Tango Ballet’, followed by ‘Four for Tango’: written especially for the famous Kronos Quartet, it makes even non-dancers or reluctant dancers feel like taking a turn or two on the dance floor.
