Argentian Osvaldo Golijov’s opera is one of the most vivid events to have taken place in contemporary classical music of the 21st century – it has been tremendously successful in America’s biggest opera houses as well as in Australia, Granada, Madrid and elsewhere.
Golijov has created a vibrant, devastating and deeply moving master work rich with Spanish rhythms, flamenco flair, Arabian vignettes, Jewish motifs, sound associations, and passionate melodies, the production of which in Cēsis will be an unforgettable experience.
At the core of the plot for the opera Ainadamar (Arabian for “Fountain of Tears”) are Margarita Xirgu’s memories of Lorca’s play Mariana Pineda, in which she played the lead role, and 1936, when Lorca refuses to go to South America with Xirgu; instead, not heeding the warnings of his friends, Lorca goes to his hometown, where he is then murdered under mysterious circumstances.
The role of Lorca will be played by the esteemed soloist Marina Pardo, who sang the role in the Spanish premier of the opera and then took part in the highly successful Opera Philadelphia’s production of it.
In the role of Margarita Xirgu, Lorca’s muse, we will see Maria Hinojosa Montenegro; Montenegro has sung the role both at the Oviedo opera house and at Opera Philadelphia, where the critics described her performance as “vocally and visually a dream”.
In Philadelphia, Pardo’s and Montenegro’s stage partner was Alfredo Tejada, in the role of the murderous Falangist. Tejada, an award-winning professional flamenco singer with powerfully energetic magnetism, will also be participating in the Cēsis production.
